Our weekend at the Central Oregon Coast ....
Route:
- Going
- Returning, Still Returning (okay, so the trip back was tooo long, but we sure covered a lot of roadways)
We stayed at The Whaler hotel in Newport on Nye Beach. We had a great lunch at Cafe Stephanie (salmon burrito). After our late day drive just south of Yachats, we stumbled upon The Landmark, where we enjoyed a fabulous seafood dinner (local oysters and halibut and chips - ask us about the small but quite interesting wedding party that arrived just after we sat down). On a wonderful sunny day at Newport Bay, we enjoyed some of the freshest clam chowder and Dungeness Crab anyone could desire. We walked into Pacific Seafood whose business is clearly wholesale focused. Lucky for Newport, at their packing facility, they also have a seafood market. This seafood market also happens to have a few tables and chairs with windows looking onto the seafood packing floor. We sat down, ordered some soup and a crab. They bring you a hot crab with butter and lemon, cheese toast, and all the necessary implements (napkins, shell cracker, bucket) to dig-in and thoroughly enjoy the experience of eating fresh Dungeness Crab. We'll be back.
Trip Highlights
Whale watching at Depoe Bay
Cobble Beach at Yaquina Bay
Cook's Chasm (and, if not for Jenny, we would have driven right past it!) The water spouts and ebbing and flowing waters provide great spectating (you can feel the power of the water). We were the only people down on the beach area, and we were there just as the sun was setting - is was pretty spectacular.
All this, and there is still more to see / do! For more photos, be sure to check out our "Oregon Coast" set on Flickr.
